Arrest Sheriff for contempt – Makarfi C’ttee

Daily Trust - - INSIDE POLITICS - By

Saawua Terzungwe The Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led PDP caretaker committee has urged the Inspector General of Police to arrest and prosecute Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and his candidate for Edo State governorship election, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, for alleged contempt.

Spokesman of the Makarfiled committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, made the call in a statement yesterday while reacting to Sheriff’s issuance of Certificate of Return to Iduoriyekemwen as PDP candidate for the election in Edo State.

“The PDP condemned in strong terms, the attitude of Ali Sheriff in recent times and urged security agencies to live up to their responsibilities before he brings the judiciary to ridicule. This is not the first time he is disobeying court judgment or order.

“Sheriff has become an authority in the country with flagrant disobedience of the Nigerian Constitution, the Electoral Act and the PDP Constitution without being arrested or detained by security agencies. Is he above the law if we may ask?”

Adeyeye said the Justice Abdullah Mohammed Liman’s judgment of July 4 was superior to all other rulings, exparte orders or interlocutory injunctions procured by Sheriff “and his co-travelers.”

He said “Sheriff’s reliance on Justice Okon Abang’s ruling of Thursday, June 30, 2016, is an attempt to confuse unsuspecting members of the public.”

Sheriff ’s spokesman, Mr. Inuwa Bwala, said: “Makarfi is being desperately insensible, knowing that he should be the one to go to jail for contempt of court. The Port Harcourt judgement is like any of the three judgements Sheriff has. A court of competent jurisdiction recognizes Sheriff as the only lawful leadership to conduct primaries and submit the candidate for the election,” he said.
