Tension in Enugu over Sarkin Hausawa

Daily Trust - - NEWS - From Tony Adibe, Enugu

There is tension among members of the northern community in Enugu State over the reported installation of another Sarkin Hausawa (traditional ruler) in the state, Alhaji Yusuf Sambo.

Daily Trust recalls that on May 19, 2016, the northern community in the state reportedly elected Alhaji Idris Ardo as their new Sarkin Hausawa at a ceremony in Enugu.

But on Wednesday some members of the community including the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Markurdi Area Command, Mr. Abubakar Doma alongside other kingmakers, installed Alhaji Yusuf Sambo as Sarkin Hausawa of Enugu State.

However, addressing newsmen in Enugu yesterday, Alhaji Ardo appealed to the Inspector General of Police and the Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, to call AIG Doma to order.

Also speaking, a spokesman of the northern community in the state who pleaded anonymity said: “There is serious tension in the northern community. This big oga came with plenty of policemen to the Central Mosque and installed Alhaji Yusuf Sambo as the Sarkin Hausawa when we had already elected Alhaji Idris Ardo as the Sarkin Hausawa Enugu the Third.”

But when contacted on the phone, Doma said what he and his group did was legal and if anyone felt otherwise, he could go to court to challenge the action.

“If anybody thinks that we did something illegal, let the person go to court and challenge it. We didn’t do anything illegal,” he said.
