3 killed in Benue communal clash
Three people were yesterday killed in a suspected communal clash between two communities in Okpokpwu local government area of Benue State.
The deceased were said to have been killed in a renewed hostility between people of Edumoga and Okpoga districts in Okpokpwu.
A native of the area said trouble started when some vigilantes killed a suspected criminal who hailed from one of the embattled communities, adding that the action did not go down well with the deceased’s kinsmen who said their son was not a criminal.
The source stated that the aggrieved villagers launched a reprisal which led to the death of three vigilantes from the other districts only two weeks ago and now three other victims had again paid the price for the bitter rivalry brewing among the communities.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Moses Yamu said he had not been briefed on the latest killing in the area, but he had earlier confirmed that gunmen attacked Okpoga vigilante office about 1:30am penultimate Sunday and shot at five men.
Yamu said three of the victims were later confirmed dead when they were rushed to the hospital by the Police who responded to the distress call.
