Emir urges FG to provide fertilizer to farmers in Bwari
The Emir of Bwari, Alhaji Musa Ijakoro, has appealed to the Federal Government to provide fertiliser to farmers to improve crop yield and agricultural productivity in the area.
Ijakoro made the appeal on Wednesday in Bwari in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) while giving his goodwill message to mark the Sallah celebration.
He noted that the supply of fertiliser to farmers by the government in the past, contributed to high yields.
The traditional ruler, therefore, urged the government to renew its agricultural policy geared toward supporting farmers with fertiliser, to encourage farming and food production.
“Fertiliser are not frequently supplied as before; government used to give us in surplus; but today there is none available to even buy.
“The soil in Bwari is not fertile enough; without fertiliser, we will not be getting good yields.
“Therefore, I am appealing to the federal government to supply us with fertiliser; every farmer has to be empowered with fertiliser to ensure good agricultural production.’’
He said that although Bwari is the food basket of FCT, it lacked adequate provision of fertiliser to complement the irrigation often derived from the Lower Usuma Dam.
“Farmers will always need fertiliser because it contains plant nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
“The advantages that can be derived from fertiliser include the maintenance of soil fertility that will enable farmers to grow nutritious crops” he said. (NAN)
