APC chieftain chides Ayade over caretaker c’ttees

Daily Trust - - INSIDE POLITICS - From Eyo Charles, Calabar

The governorship candidate of All Progressive Congress (APC) in the 2015 general elections in Cross River State, Mr Odey Ochicha, has cautioned Governor Ben Ayade amending the Local Government Act to allow him set up caretaker committees for local government areas in the state.

Ochicha challenged Ayade to organise elections to test his popularity, saying that the opposition APC in the state would sweep the polls.

Ochicha said that any move, other than holding elections to elect council officials, would be resisted by the APC.

In a statement issued in Calabar, Ochicha maintained that there was nothing like caretaker committees for local governments in the 1999 Constitution, wondering why Ayade was afraid to face electorate.

“The local government is a separate tier of government,” the statement said, adding: “Therefore, they should not be subjected to the absolute control of state governors.”

Ochicha also took a swipe at the state legislators for contemplating to alter the Local Government Act.
