Flood destroys 52 houses in Wurno

Daily Trust - - NEWS - From Abubakar Auwal, Sokoto

No fewer than 52 houses have been destroyed by a downpour that turned into a flood in Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The late night rain also destroyed assorted food items worth millions of naira.

The Chairman of the local government council, Alhaji Abdulkadir Jelani, told newsmen that the problem was aggravated by indiscriminate dumping of waste products which blocked some waterways in the affected areas.

The chairman said that the victims were now squatting with neighbours, relatives and good Samaritans in areas not affected by the flood.

Jelani said that, although there was no loss of life, the flood had destroyed 54 houses and some assorted farm produce worth millions of naira.

They include onions, garlic, rice, wheat and beans, among others, following the submerging of hundreds of farmlands.

‘I am appealing to the state government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to come to the immediate aid of the victims,’” Jelani said.
