Police parade 11 suspects over kidnap of S/Leonean envoy
Police yesterday paraded 11 suspects over the kidnap of the Deputy High Commissioner of Sierra Leone to Nigeria, retired Major General Alfred Claude-Nelson.
Nelson, who was kidnapped along the Abuja- Kaduna high-way on June 30, was freed on July 5 after massive operations by the police.
Parading the suspects at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, police spokesman, DCP Don Awunah, said operatives of the Force had dismantled the kidnap network in Kaduna and environs.
He said in a coordinated operation based on intelligence and technical support, the intelligence Response Team of the police smashed the 11 man kidnap gang that had for some time now terrorized Kaduna State, the FCT and other north central state of Nigeria.
Awunah said the gang was responsible for the abduction of Major General Alfred Claude-Nelson, the Executive Director of Dangote Group and many other high profile kidnap incidents for ransom.
Awunah said the suspected kidnappers in police custody are: Alhaji Rabiu Yusuf, aged 45 years who is the gang leader, Garba Abubakar also known as Habu, aged 27 years who is the second in command, Yusuf Adamu, Hussaini Musa and Shuaibu Idris .
Others are: Usman Bello, Musa Ali, Muhammadu Abubakar, Suleiman Abubakar, Gambo Ibrahim, and Balarabe Mohammadu.
Rabiu Yusuf admitted that they carried out the kidnap of the envoy and received N1.5m as ransom. Another suspect named Umar is still at large.
