Obasanjo pays tribute to Shinkafi, Monguno
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described the late presidential candidate, Alhaji Umaru Shinkafi as a constant politician in Nigeria’s political scene and avid chronicler of the country’s evolution.
Also, Obasanjo described the late Alhaji Shettima Ali Monguno as an epitome of selfless service and total loyalty to the common good, declaring that he was unarguably one of those most passionate in promoting the Nigerian agenda.
The former president in separate condolence letters to the families of the two late elder statesmen, said their demise was a deep loss to him and the country.
On Monguno, the former President said, “The news of the death of one of the finest elder-statesmen and political actors Nigeria ever had, Alhaji Shettima Ali Monguno, has brought a deep sense of loss to me and millions of his compatriots who admired him for his steadfast commitment to the public good. It was with a deep sense of personal loss that I write to commiserate with the deceased entire family and the good people of Borno State on the passing of this eminent Nigerian.”
On Shinkafi, Obasanjo wrote, “As a politician, it is, indeed, noteworthy that he was constant on Nigeria’s political scene for the better part of the past two decades. He contested for the presidential ticket of the centre-right National Republican Convention (NRC) in 1992. He also emerged as one of the top leaders of the All Peoples Party (APP), under which he contested, in alliance with AD, as running mate to Chief Olu Falae in 1999. Late Shinkafi was indeed, an avid chronicler of our evolution as a people and a nation. This eminent Nigerian has left us at a crucial stage in our nation’s history and he will be sorely missed.”
