Po­lice foil attack on oil fa­cil­ity in Edo

The Po­lice said it foiled an attack on an oil fa­cil­ity by suc­cess­fully det­o­nat­ing an Im­pro­vised Ex­plo­sive De­vice (IED) planted on an Oil Well at Gelegele com­mu­nity in Ovia North West Lo­cal gov­ern­ment of Edo state .

Brief­ing jour­nal­ists in Benin yes­ter­day, the state Com­mis­sioner of Po­lice, Chris Ezike, said the oil well was be­ing op­er­ated by Dubri Oil Com­pany with head­quar­ter in Benin City.

“On July 10, we re­ceived in­for­ma­tion that an ob­ject sus­pected to be IED was planted in the Oil Well at Gelegele, and a team of ex­plo­sive or­di­nance de­tec­tives backed by tac­ti­cal op­er­a­tives were dis­patched to the scene. At the scene, it was dis­cov­ered that two ob­jects sus­pected to be IEDs were planted in the oil well head, while two sack bags con­tain­ing Amfo (mix­ture of Am­mo­nium Ni­trate and fuel) were tied to the oil well head,’’ he said.

He added that af­ter close ex­am­i­na­tion of the IEDs, it was dis­cov­ered that it con­tained two det­o­na­tors, a strand of cor­tex, dy­la­tine (high ex­plo­sive) power source and fire cable, say­ing that the IED were suc­cess­fully det­o­nated.
