FG will de­velop wa­ter­ways soon- NIWA MD

The new Manag­ing Di­rec­tor of the Na­tional In­land Wa­ter­ways Author­ity (NIWA), Mr Boss Mustapha, has said that the fed­eral gov­ern­ment is com­mit­ted to the devel­op­ment of the wa­ter­ways to boost busi­ness and eco­nomic ac­tiv­i­ties.

Boss, who said this in Lokoja, Mon­day, while as­sum­ing his new as­sign­ment, said that the pres­sure mounted on the na­tion’s roads in the process of trans­port­ing goods across the coun­try would be re­duced by the time the wa­ter­ways be­came de­vel­oped and op­er­a­tional.

The new NIWA boss said that wa­ter­ways would be opened to boost eco­nomic ac­tiv­i­ties and gen­er­ate rev­enues for the gov­ern­ment.

He thanked Pres­i­dent Muham­madu Buhari for en­trust­ing him with the re­spon­si­bil­ity of over­see­ing the af­fairs of the na­tional in­land wa­ter­ways, say­ing that he would not fail the na­tion.

Ear­lier, the out­go­ing act­ing manag­ing di­rec­tor of NIWA, Mr Dan­ladi Ibrahim, enu­mer­ated some of the achieve­ments recorded in the last one year un­der his watch to in­clude the dredg­ing of the Niger River from Warri to Baro in Niger State, ren­o­va­tion of Onit­sha and Baro River Ports, pur­chase of 18 se­cu­rity pa­trol boats, pro­cure­ment of water clear­ing equip­ment and fer­ries.
