FG will develop waterways soon- NIWA MD
The new Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr Boss Mustapha, has said that the federal government is committed to the development of the waterways to boost business and economic activities.
Boss, who said this in Lokoja, Monday, while assuming his new assignment, said that the pressure mounted on the nation’s roads in the process of transporting goods across the country would be reduced by the time the waterways became developed and operational.
The new NIWA boss said that waterways would be opened to boost economic activities and generate revenues for the government.
He thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for entrusting him with the responsibility of overseeing the affairs of the national inland waterways, saying that he would not fail the nation.
Earlier, the outgoing acting managing director of NIWA, Mr Danladi Ibrahim, enumerated some of the achievements recorded in the last one year under his watch to include the dredging of the Niger River from Warri to Baro in Niger State, renovation of Onitsha and Baro River Ports, purchase of 18 security patrol boats, procurement of water clearing equipment and ferries.
