Restructure NERC, El-Rufai advises FG

Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has advised the federal government to restructure the National Electricity Regulatory commission (NERC) to attract investors.

El-Rufai spoke at the Second Edition of the National Council on Power in Kaduna yesterday. He said the commission currently would not inspire investor confidence as it was constituted purely on political considerations.

He said unless credible people were given the task of running the commission, potential energy private investors would continue to shy away from investing in the Nigeria power sector.

“The decision by National Electricity Regulatory Commission in March last year to reduce tariff just to help President Jonathan win elections destroyed any sense of independence and credibility of the commission,” he said, adding that the last administration’s power reforms failed.
