Avegetable and sugar cane farmer drowned in a river on Tuesday, while his 22-year-old son survived, at the Old Kutunku village, Gwagwalada Area Council.

A resident of the community who preferred anonymity told our reporter yesterday that the incident happened at about 6:42 pm.

He said the deceased, whose name is yet to be established, boarded a canoe along with his son to cross the river but the canoe hit a log of wood.

He said the deceased had loaded vegetables and sugar cane in the canoe.

“It was in the process of crossing the river after loading the canoe with sugar cane and vegetables that the canoe capsized after hitting a log. Luckily, however, his son survived after he swam and held onto a tree,” he said.

He said the corpse of the deceased was later recovered by some fishermen yesterday morning and had been buried according to Islamic rites.
