Attack on women threat to democracy — Senator Afegbua

Daily Trust - - INSIDE POLITICS - By Maureen Onochie

A senator in the Second Republic, Franca Afegbua, has said that attack on women politicians by their male counterparts threatens democracy.

She also said that immunity should not be extended to presiding officers of the national and state legislatures to avoid misuse of powers.

Speaking in Abuja, yesterday, Afegbua expressed her shock over what she described as “misuse of power” by Senator Dino Melaye, who threatened to deal with a female colleague, Senator Remi Tinubu.

She called on the Senate members to thread with caution while in office, as their actions were watched and judged by Nigerians and the world at large.

She called on male representatives to always protect their female counterparts so as to encourage their participation in politics.

“If threats on the female legislators continue, many husbands won’t allow their wives to join politics,” he said.
