Women protest against Me­laye at N/Assem­bly

Some, women, num­ber­ing about 50, yes­ter­day stormed the Na­tional Assem­bly, protest­ing the ut­ter­ances of Se­na­tor Dino Me­laye (APC, Kogi West ), against Se­na­tor Oluremi Tin­ubu (APC, La­gos Cen­tral).

Me­laye and Tin­ubu had en­gaged in a ver­bal war dur­ing a closed door ses­sion over a week ago. It was al­leged that Me­laye had threat­ened to beat up Se­na­tor Tin­ubu.

The pro­test­ers, who wore T-shirts with in­scrip­tions that read: ‘No to Im­punity for Gen­der Based Vi­o­lence’, were heard chant­ing, “Stop vi­o­lence against women”.

They also car­ried plac­ards that read, “Sup­port Gen­der Equal­ity Op­por­tu­nity Bill”, “A Se­na­tor is a Se­na­tor, and Women are not Threat Ob­ject“, “Senate’s Lead­er­ship Si­lence in the face of Vi­o­lence Against Women is Con­spir­acy”, and “Say no to Im­punity” among oth­ers.

Ad­dress­ing news­men, a women leader of the APC, Mrs. Kemi Nel­son, said “enough is enough”, and asked the Senate to take a dis­ci­plinary ac­tion against Se­na­tor Me­laye.

She said, “This is im­punity and must be stopped. We must be ac­corded our right.”
