Al-Makura to workers: Choose between layoff and partial pay

Daily Trust - - NEWS - From Hassan Ibrahim, Lafia

Governor Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State has asked the organized labour in the state to choose between mass retrenchment of workers to accommodate the minimum wage previously enjoyed by workers or receive payment of salaries in percentage.

The governor suggested the option yesterday in Lafia during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Interim Management Committee (IMC) chairmen of 11 local government areas, saying however that he did not wish that anyone be retrenched.

Al-Makura said he preferred to pay full salary but that his government was also faced with the difficult option of paying full salary and stopping all development projects and amenities.

He called on the workers union to accept that circumstances forced the government to review their salaries.
