Kano PDP, APC trade words ahead of Assembly by-election
The PDP in Kano has petitioned the Independent National Electorate Commission (INEC), the police and other security agencies on alleged plan to destabilise the forthcoming state house of assembly byelection for Minjibir Local Government Area scheduled for Saturday, July 30.
But the APC has debunked the claim, saying it was the PDP that was planning to upset the process.
PDP’s chairman in Minjibir Local Government, Alhaji Shehu Na-Allah, told newsmen in Kano, yesterday, that top APC functionaries, including Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, held a meeting on Saturday July 23, at the state’s government house, where a plan was hatched on how to destabilise the election.
“During the meeting, local government chairmen were directed to mobilise thugs (YanDaba) and other APC supporters from the 44 local governments in the state to Minjibir a day to the election for the purpose of intimidating and harassing voters during the election,” he alleged.
Na-Allah added that his party had discovered another plan by the APC-led government to arrest PDP’s key stakeholders, especially indigenes of Minjibir Local Government ahead of the election.
“We have already petitioned INEC, police, DSS and other security agencies on the matter. We are hopeful that the concerned agencies would not allow themselves to be used by the ruling party,” he said.
Reacting, the state chairman of the APC, Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa, described the allegation as mere joke aimed at diverting the attention of the ruling party from the election.
Doguwa said: “The APC has equally heard about a plan by the PDP to disrupt the election. Everybody knows that Kano is APC’s stronghold and there is no way PDP will win election in the state.”
However, the new state commissioner of police, Alhaji Rabi’u Yusuf, has promised to provide adequate security during the election.
Daily Trust reports that the by-election followed the death of the former representative of Minjibir local government, Alhaji Tahir Hamisu Gurjiya, of the APC.
