Gundiri: A desperate politician?

Daily Trust - - OPINION - Mahmud Inuwa, Limawa ward, Jimeta-Yola.

Markus Gundiri can best be described as a desperate politician, that his ultimate aim was to occupy the exalted seat of the Dougerei lodge. His recent defection back to the All Progressives Congress (APC) less than a year tells it all. Markus Gundiri joined politics for the first in 2012 and vied for the governorship of the state under

Action Congress of Nigeria and was overwhelmingly defeated by the then gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who was the then Governor Murtala Nyako, he dumped the party in 2015, and joined the formation of the mega party, the APC. Seeing, that he may not realised his ambition of becoming the Governor of the state under the APC, he left the party and joined the PDP and obtained the N10m expression form to contest for the primaries.

He later left the party, when Malam Nuhu Ribadu, was imposed in a kangaroo convention held in Abuja as the gubernatorial candidate of the PDP courtesy of the presidency at that time. Markus Gundiri recanted as well, retraced his steps and embraced the Social Democratic Party (SDP) thereby becoming the gubernatorial candidate of the party and was defeated at the poll by the present Governor Mohammed Bindow Jibrilla with more 100,000 votes. His recent defection was purportedly the handiwork of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engineer David Babachir Lawal, who hail from the same place with him.

It is noteworthy, that in less than five years in venturing into the murky waters of politics due to his desperation, he changes three political parties.

Paradoxically, the main purpose of his rejoicing the APC was to play the card of a spoiler in 2019, when the incumbent declare his intention for a second term as the SGF is not on the same pedestal with Governor Mohammed Bindow Jibrilla.

Also, there is a lot of discussion in political circle that both the SGF and Gundiri intent to play the religion card in 2019.

Political analysts opined, that the SGF is empowering Markus Gundiri for that purpose with a lot of contracts. And his defection was under the instruction of the SGF. But the irony is that the people of the state are highly sophisticated to be sway on religion line.

Therefore it is just a mere waste of time for the duo, even if they thought in their calculation, that the issue of religion can easily give them a leeway to occupy the exalted seat of Adamawa State.

People of the state, are of the conviction, that what the Governor Bindow Jibrilla, is doing has never happen in the political history of the state as such, there is no need for distraction from the political elites of the state. This stems from his populist programmes of transforming the state to an enviable position to be at par with contemporaries.

It amounts to great disservice for any individual from the state to indulge in any kind of intrigues to distract what the Governor Bindow Jibrilla, is doing now. Though the defector has said, he is not joining the party to hijack it, but undercurrent is at the end, he would not vie for the platform of the party as some political pundits postulated.

Whatever may be his intention, the people of the state are wiser than before to be sway based on any primordial interest. The people know what is good or bad and they are anxiously waiting for 2019.
