Taraba farmers, firm disagree over exploitation claims
Tea and coffee farmers in the Mambilla-Plateau area of Taraba State have alleged exploitation by officials of a tea and coffee processing company in the area.
The company has debunked the allegation.
A representative of the farmers spoke yesterday while receiving about 5,000 tea and coffee seedlings donated to them by the Raw Materials Research and Development Council in Abuja.
Adamu Danjuma Buba told stakeholders at the event that Mambilla Beverages Nigeria Limited was buying a kilogram of green leaves at N26, only for the company to process, package and sell the same quantity at about N750.
He expressed regret that the action was discouraging people from coffee tea farming in the Mambilla-Plateau region.
The farmer pleaded with the representative of the company at the event to take the message back to the management to address the situation.
But speaking with Daily Trust shortly after the event, the representative of the company, Abdulrahman Sani Waziri, debunked the farmers’ claims, saying his company spends a lot of money processing the green leaves.
He said the farmers did not even know the real amount their finished products were being sold in the market if they were raising such allegation, adding that their products remained one of the cheapest in the country. however
