The Federal Government yesterday said it is willing to drive the nation’s socio-economic development through opportunities in the telecommunications and Information Communication Technology (ICT) sectors.

Minister of Communications , Barrister Adebayo Shittu, who disclosed this at the opening ceremony of ICTEL EXPO 2016 organised by Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry( LCCI) in Lagos, said the development was necessary due to the dwindling revenue from oil and gas sector.

He said Nigeria stands to gain a lot from leveraging on opportunities in the ICT sector to boost the economic fortunes of the country.

He added that the role of mobile services in delivering economic and social impacts in Nigeria is widely recognised.

“Mobile telephone has enabled growth strategies by delivering wide- ranging benefits to the Nigerian economy and society,” he said.

Speaking , President of Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) , Mrs Nike Akande said that Information Communication Technology (ICT) has become the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, adding that its benefits could not be overemphasized now that Nigeria economy is in dire need of diversification.

“ICT is strategic in driving productivity and efficiency in all sectors of the economy. Today, all sectors of Nigeria economy are leveraging on ICT. This is evident in financial services sector where electronic banking is now in vogue, the agricultural sector where government now allocate fertilizer to farmers through mobile phones ,” she added.

She noted that Nigeria has witnessed a phenomenon growth in its ICT sector over the past one and a half years, but there is still enormous potential yet to be tapped.
