Flood blocks Karu-Mararaba road

Daily Trust - - ASO CHRONICLE - By Maryetieno Udoh & Stellamaris Asiegbu

Heavy downpour Sunday night flooded some areas of Karu including the Abattoir-Mararaba road.

Residents said the night rain lasted for about six hours, leaving commuters stranded as they came out to go to work or attend to business on Monday morning.

When our reporters visited the scene, a lot of cars, trailers and motorcycles were stuck at a bridge near Habdurisi filling station by City College junction.

The flooding also caused erosion around the stream, exposing Habdurisi’s underground fuel tanks.

The manager of the fuel station, Mr Usman Shittu, said ,“This is not the first time this is happening but this year’s occurrence is the worst because of the bridge which does not allow enough water to pass through it. Once the water rises, it overflows the bridge and affects our fuel station.”

He added that the erosion has caused serious damage to the station as they’d have to close up for renovation.

“In this state of destruction, no one can come and buy fuel from us. We have to rebuild and that is going to cost us a lot,” he said.
