1 killed, 20 ar­rested in Ek­iti cult clash

At least one per­son has been con­firmed dead by the tra­di­tional ruler of Ikere Ek­iti, Oba Ade­jimi Adu Alag­bado, fol­low­ing a cult clash in the town yes­ter­day.

Twenty oth­ers have also been ar­rested by vig­i­lantes and handed over to the po­lice.

But some res­i­dents of the town told our cor­re­spon­dent that no fewer than five had lost their lives in the clash with most of them hacked to death in Araromi area of the town.

It was gath­ered that cult mem­bers in the town have un­leashed ter­ror, launch­ing at­tacks and counter-at­tacks since the be­gin­ning of the week.

Se­cu­rity has been beefed up in the com­mu­nity as Po­lice now con­duct stop-and-search on ve­hi­cles com­ing in and out of the town.

Res­i­dents now go to bed early while shops, busi­ness cen­tres and places of wor­ship now close early be­cause of the se­cu­rity scare.

The state po­lice spokesman Al­berto Adeyemi could not be reached on his mo­bile phone to con­firm the killings. He had also not re­sponded to a text mes­sage sent to him as of press time.

But the Ogoga of Ikere, Oba Ade­jimi Adu Alag­bado, con­firmed that one per­son had been killed so far in the clashes.
