Box snatch­ing, fight­ing mar Imo North re-run poll

Fight­ing and snatch­ing of elec­toral ma­te­ri­als among oth­ers char­ac­terised yes­ter­day’s re­run elec­tion for Imo North district and Isiala Mbano state con­stituency of Imo State.

The elec­tion, which was con­ducted in the16 polling units in Osu-Achara wards in Isiala Mbano LGA, Obowo and in some other ar­eas, was meant to make up the ear­lier re-run held on July 23, 2016.

In Obio­huru wards in Isiala Mbano, fight­ing broke out lead­ing to the de­ser­tion of the INEC of­fi­cials. At Umuo­hiri Cen­tral School polling booth 001, the sit­u­a­tion was charged be­cause of the last ex­pe­ri­ence.

A com­mu­nity leader and for­mer po­lit­i­cal aide to for­mer Gover­nor Ikedi Ohakim, Mr Chuks Chuk­wue­meka, told jour­nal­ists that at Obio­huru, Orji, and Umu­chioma, elec­toral boxes and ma­te­ri­als were snatched by thugs.

Chuk­wue­meka said se­cu­rity of­fi­cials ar­rested some groups of thugs who snatched bal­lot boxes in one of the polling units.

But at Isiebu polling booth 001, the home ward of Se­na­tor Ifeanyichukwu Ara­raume, the vot­ers turned out in great num­bers to cast their votes peace­fully.
