Box snatching, fighting mar Imo North re-run poll
Fighting and snatching of electoral materials among others characterised yesterday’s rerun election for Imo North district and Isiala Mbano state constituency of Imo State.
The election, which was conducted in the16 polling units in Osu-Achara wards in Isiala Mbano LGA, Obowo and in some other areas, was meant to make up the earlier re-run held on July 23, 2016.
In Obiohuru wards in Isiala Mbano, fighting broke out leading to the desertion of the INEC officials. At Umuohiri Central School polling booth 001, the situation was charged because of the last experience.
A community leader and former political aide to former Governor Ikedi Ohakim, Mr Chuks Chukwuemeka, told journalists that at Obiohuru, Orji, and Umuchioma, electoral boxes and materials were snatched by thugs.
Chukwuemeka said security officials arrested some groups of thugs who snatched ballot boxes in one of the polling units.
But at Isiebu polling booth 001, the home ward of Senator Ifeanyichukwu Araraume, the voters turned out in great numbers to cast their votes peacefully.
