Pilot lands plane ‘blind’ after giant hailstones shatter cockpit windscreen

Daily Trust - - DIGEST -

A brave pilot landed a tourist jet “blind” after giant hailstones (inset) smashed the cockpit’s windscreen and almost tore off its nosecone (above). This incredible picture shows the plane after the pilot’s heroic emergency landing at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport with 127 PASSENGERS on board last Thursday. In a video taken of the landing, a voice on the ground is heard saying: “He won’t do it, he won’t do it.” Another video taken inside the cabin showed passengers gripping the seats in front as the aircraft endured a bumpy approach. Other fliers can be heard screaming. The aircraft did land safely, however, and was greeted by applause from waiting emergency services. Capt Alexander Akopov said he and other crew were celebrating as if it was a “second birthday” after his life-saving heroics in coping with damage caused by hailstones the size of hen’s eggs. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko called the captain to congratulate him and awarded him with the Ukrainian Order of Courage. Social Media/East2West News
