3 in prison over ho­mo­sex­ual ho­tel in La­gos

Three friends, Patrick Okeze, 56, Sun­day Is­nag, 30 and Bright Oba, 28, are cur­rently be­ing re­manded in prison cus­tody, La­gos for al­legedly op­er­at­ing a ho­tel where ho­mo­sex­ual ac­tiv­i­ties are prac­ticed.

The three friends were re­manded at the week­end by a Yaba Chief Mag­is­trates’ Court in La­gos.

It was gath­ered that the ac­cused per­sons are the own­ers of the ho­tel known as Vin­tage Ho­tel, Owode Onirin.

It was gath­ered that when de­tec­tives raided the place on July 29, 2017, about 28 men were ar­rested, al­legedly in­dulging in ho­mo­sex­ual prac­tices.

The po­lice pros­e­cu­tor, Ro­manus Unuigbe, said that for own­ing a place where same sex ac­tiv­i­ties is be­ing prac­ticed, the ac­cused per­sons have run fowl of the laws of the land.

The ac­cused, whose ad­dresses were not pro­vided, are fac­ing a charge of aid­ing and pro­mot­ing same sex ac­tiv­i­ties.

Chief Mag­is­trate Ade­wale Ojo, who gave the re­mand or­der, said the ac­cused should be re­manded in Kirikiri Prison pend­ing the re­ceipt of le­gal ad­vice from the Of­fice of the Direc­tor of Pub­lic Pros­e­cu­tion.

Ojo ad­journed the case till Septem­ber 8, 2017. The trio had ear­lier pleaded not guilty to the charge. The pros­e­cu­tor, Ro­manus Unuigbe, told the court that the ac­cused com­mit­ted the of­fences on July 29 at Vin­tage Ho­tel, Owode Onirin, La­gos.

He told the court that the ac­cused en­cour­aged same sex ac­tiv­i­ties in the club and bar sec­tion of the ho­tel while 28 men en­gag­ing in ho­mo­sex­u­al­ity were ap­pre­hended there.
