Down­pour de­stroys farms, live­stock, houses in Ji­gawa

Hun­dreds of farm­lands, farm pro­duce, live­stock and houses have been washed away fol­low­ing a down­pour in Gumel Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment Area of Ji­gawa State.

Daily Trust gath­ered yes­ter­day that out of six vil­lages af­fected by the dis­as­ter on Fri­day, there were Fu­lani set­tle­ments where the said live­stock were af­fected and com­mu­ni­ties where farms un­der the newly in­tro­duced clus­ter farm­ing sys­tem were de­stroyed by the flood which re­sulted from the down­pour said to have lasted for about three hours.

Sorghum, mil­let, cow­pea, wa­ter­melon and sesame were named as some of the farm items lost to the dis­as­ter in Garin Gambo, Gwari, Garin Gal­adima, Baikarya, Zuge and Garin Baki vil­lages.

When this re­porter con­tacted the Ex­ec­u­tive Sec­re­tary of Ji­gawa State Emer­gency Man­age­ment Agency, Sani Yusuf Babura, he said assess­ment on the mag­ni­tude of the dis­as­ter was still on.
