FRSC seeks to arm per­son­nel

The Fed­eral Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is seek­ing to arm its per­son­nel to guard against in­ces­sant at­tacks dur­ing their op­er­a­tions.

Speak­ing dur­ing the corps man­age­ment strat­egy meet­ing ses­sion yes­ter­day in Abuja, the Corps Mar­shal, Boboye Oyeyemi lamented the in­ces­sant at­tacks on the per­son­nel and urged them to be more vig­i­lant in their course of duty.

Act­ing Sec­re­tary to the Gov­ern­ment of the Fed­er­a­tion, Dr Habiba Lawal said though it has be­come nec­es­sary for the road safety per­son­nel to pro­tect them­selves while on duty, the is­sue of ob­tain­ing arms has to un­dergo due process at the Na­tional As­sem­bly.

Speak­ing through the Per­ma­nent Sec­re­tary, Gen­eral Ser­vice, Dr Roy Ugoh dur­ing, she said there must be a pub­lic hear­ing at the Na­tional As­sem­bly and an ap­pro­pri­ate rea­son must be spelt be­fore the per­son­nel are al­lowed to take up arms.

She how­ever urged the road safety per­son­nel not to re­lent in en­forc­ing law and order on Nige­rian roads, de­spite the vi­o­lent at­tacks on them.

Oyeyemi said the corps will con­tinue to col­lab­o­rate with rel­e­vant stake­hold­ers, such as se­cu­rity agen­cies and trans­port unions to pro­tect of­fi­cers as well as join hands in en­forc­ing the laws for safer roads in the coun­try.
