FRSC seeks to arm personnel
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is seeking to arm its personnel to guard against incessant attacks during their operations.
Speaking during the corps management strategy meeting session yesterday in Abuja, the Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi lamented the incessant attacks on the personnel and urged them to be more vigilant in their course of duty.
Acting Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Dr Habiba Lawal said though it has become necessary for the road safety personnel to protect themselves while on duty, the issue of obtaining arms has to undergo due process at the National Assembly.
Speaking through the Permanent Secretary, General Service, Dr Roy Ugoh during, she said there must be a public hearing at the National Assembly and an appropriate reason must be spelt before the personnel are allowed to take up arms.
She however urged the road safety personnel not to relent in enforcing law and order on Nigerian roads, despite the violent attacks on them.
Oyeyemi said the corps will continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders, such as security agencies and transport unions to protect officers as well as join hands in enforcing the laws for safer roads in the country.
