AChief Magistrate Court sitting in Potiskum has sentenced 18-year-old Yusuf Garba of Gabar-daKasuwa, Potiskum town in Yobe State to three years in prison for raping a 3-year-old girl.

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) prosecutor, Ahmed Mohammed Yakubu, told the court that Garba, who lived in the same area with victim, took her into his room and raped her.

“As a result, the minor had a tear in her vagina to a level that she cannot retain urine,” he said.

He said the offence is punishable under section 283 of the panel code law.

When the First Information Report was read to Garba, he pleaded not guilty to the offence as charged, but the court rejected his plea and ordered the prosecution counsel to probe his case beyond doubt.

The prosecutor tendered witnesses and medical report, which confirmed that the convict had perpetrated the offence.

In his judgment, the presiding Magistrate, Ahmed Y. Alagarno, convicted Garba and sentenced him to 36 months (three years) imprisonment without option of fine.

Daily Trust reports that there is a growing concern over the high cases of rape, especially of minors.
