Katsina govt, opposition disagree over pilgrims protest

Daily Trust - - NEWS - From Habibu Umar Aminu, Katsina

The Executive Secretary of the Katsina State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Muhammad Abu Rimi, has blamed the opposition behind a protest over delay in the 4th flight of intending pilgrims from the state.

But the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) distanced itself from the protest, saying that it was a clear sign of failure on the part of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Pilgrims on the 4th flight had alleged going through undue hardship of sleeping on the floor following the delay at the airport.

Speaking on the matter, Rimi said the opposition instigated the pilgrims by dishing out rumours to them. “They took to the social media to say so many unprintable and unnecessary things,” he said.

However, the PDP chairman in Katsina State Salisu Majigiri said it was regrettable that the APC could not handle 4,000 pilgrims, adding that this was among the many failures anticipated and people should expect more.

About 237 officials are accompanying the 4,930 state pilgrims. Already 2,086 have been airlifted with the fifth flight scheduled for today.
