Man bags 6 months’ imprisonment for snatching 2 cell phones
An FCT Area Court judge, Abubakar Sadiq, on Tuesday sentenced a driver, Bashir Lawal, to six months imprisonment for snatching two cell phones.
The court convicted Lawal, 30, after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of theft.
However, the court gave him an option of N10,000 fine.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Dalhatu Zannah, told the court that on Aug. 1, Cpl. Audu Yusuf, attached to Minister of Budget and National Planning, Abuja, reported the incident at the Utako Police Station.
Zannah said that Yusuf reported the matter for proper investigation.
According to Zannah, the convict committed the offence on the same date at about 4:00pm at Jabi Dam.
He said the convict and three others now at large, attacked a man at Jabi Dam and forcefully snatched his two cell phones valued at N45,000.
Zannah said the complainant raised an alarm which attracted people around and the convict was caught, but the three others escaped with the phones.
The prosecutor said that during police investigation and interrogation, the convict confessed to the crime.
According to him, the offences contravened sections 79 and 287 of the penal code, which attracts five years imprisonment with option of fine or both.
The convict could not pay the fine and was taken to Suleja Prisons.(NAN)
