Emir of Dutse backs Daily Trust Golf ICONS Open
You hear all manner of things in Nigeria. From Boko Haram to Political warfare, and this new one, reprisal killings over some church killings that shouldn’t be in print in the first place. So, where is the nation heading?
You are meditating on these when an unusual invite came in from an unusual place. The Bauchi State Governor, Barrister Muhammed Abubakar, wanted to celebrate 60 years on earth and he sincerely chose the pure game of golf to herald his celebration.
Around this same period, Daily Trust, Nigeria’s newspaper of the year was packaging a historical documentation on the game of golf aptly labelled ‘Nigeria’s Golf Icons’. The Emir of Dutse, the seat of power in Jigawa State, Dr. Muhammadu Sanusi, just got wind of this at the venue of that Birthday tourney in Bauchi and quickly mentioned that such publication of Icons was long overdue and quickly praised the bold effort of Daily Trust to make such a milestone happen.
He then advised that if the publication was ready, it must be presented to cherished golfers in Nigeria through tourneys that could happen in three major Nigerian cities. He promised he would support such sweet adventure.
It could be that the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Rt. Hon. Simon Lalong Bako, an accomplished golfer himself, was reading the mind of the amiable Emir of Dutse. Without batting an eyelid, Lalong offered to host the very 1st Golf Icons tourney at the Lamingo Golf Club in Jos.
Thus, this event will happen on August 26 and 27 and yes, over 300 golfers from across the nation and some 30 selected professionals will participate.
Well, this is reading like a piece of cake. But one thing that must be remembered has to do with the big golf heart of the Dutse Emir for suggesting this event in the first place. Arrangements are in top gear for the IBB Golf and Country Club junior tournament slated for August 16-18 in Abuja.
The developmental tournament is for kids between 7-18 years and will be handled by pro golfers in the club.
The three-day event has an entry fee of N10,000 which includes accommodation, feeding, goody bag and caddy fees, as the arrival, practice day and cocktail will be on August 16th.
Organisers say the tee off will be on Thursday August 17 just as Friday August 18 wwould witness presentation of prizes.
