APC not against restructuring — Oyegun

Daily Trust - - DIGEST - By Muideen Olaniyi

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, says the party is not opposed to any move to re-structure the country through true federalism and devolution of power which are captured in its constitution and manifesto.

Chief Odigie-Oyegun said this yesterday at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja while inaugurating a 23-member committee on true federalism led by Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State.

The committee was established by the APC National Working Committee (NWC), following the persistent calls for restructuring in Nigeria by various groups and prominent personalities, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The APC National Chairman said the party could claim ownership of the need for true federalism because it was one of the principal points negotiated toward the formation of the party.

“It is, therefore, totally inconceivable for uninformed members of the public to jump on this bandwagon of reconstituting the federation to give the impression that the party was in any way against the principle of taking a fresh look at the basis of our federalism.

“For us, it is already a mantra. We know that there are things that need to be tinkered with, without, in any way, sacrificing and jeopardizing the fundamental unity of the federal republic of Nigeria,” he also said.

He said the committee should discharge the assignment “speedily” since the debate was being used by the opponents of the party who had not even defined what restructuring meant to them.

In his remarks, the chairman of the committee, Governor El-Rufai, said part of the manifesto and campaign commitment of the APC was the need to ensure a balanced federation.

He said the committee had already met three times and identified 12 key issues that needed to be discussed by Nigerians to have a clear direction, roadmap and steps to be taken to clarify and articulate the position of the APC on the subject of true federalism, restructuring, and devolution of power among others.
