Shettima inaugurates distribution of FG’s relief items at Buratai
Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State yesterday flagged off the distribution of 36,000 metric tonnes of food items donated to the traumatized people and victims of Boko Haram insurgency in Buratai District, Biu Local Government Area and other local government areas in the southern parts of the state.
Buratai is the home town of Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Tukur Buratai, which had suffered six Boko Haram attacks, with the killing of over 60 residents and destruction of houses.
The relief items were initially launched at Bakassi Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camp in Maiduguri by Acting President Yemi Osibanjo, as part of Federal Government Emergency Food Intervention in the Northeast.
Flagging off the distribution exercise at the Palace of the District Head of Buratai, Alhaji Mohammed Maina, the governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Usman Mamman Durkwa, commended President Muhammadu Buhari and the Acting President Osibanjo for the concerted efforts in degrading Boko Haram and donating food items to millions of people, especially IDPs who had returned to the liberated communities and are in dare need of food.
Durkwa said based on the enumeration conducted by officials of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Buratai alone had an enumerated population of 3,268 with 545 households that would benefit from the distribution.
He pointed out that, the exercise which would be done in communities of Hawul, Biu, Damboa, Shani, Bayo, Chibok, Kwaya Kusar and other local government areas of Southern Borno was timely, considering the economic hardship being faced by IDPs who had since returned to their liberated communities. He said each household would receive assorted bags of beans, rice, Massavita, Semovita, Macroni and condiments.
Earlier, the Chairman of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Engr. Ahmed Satomi said the intervention had changed the perception of the nation, particularly Borno in the eyes of global communities.
In his vote of thanks, the District Head of Buratai, Alhaji Mohammed Maina thanked the federal and state government for donating the relief items.
