CITY NEWS Police arrest dog, 2 persons over robbery
An Alsatian dog and two persons - Odunade Olajide and Adeniyi Adisa - are currently being detained by the police in Lagos State over series of armed robbery cases in the state.
The dog and the suspects were arrested by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Lagos Command, at the Ladipo market area, Mushin, in the Lagos metropolis.
A commercial motorcycle the police said the suspects were always using for their escape was recovered from the gang.
The suspects and the dog were arrested while allegedly attempting to rob a lady of her valuables at the Ladipo market.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Edgal Imohimi, who paraded the suspects yesterday along with the dog at the Command Headquarters, Ikeja, said that the gang’s modus operandi was to send the dog after a would-be victim, who, he said, would be thoroughly frightened to surrender his or her belongings.
Imohimi said that after dispossessing their victims of cash and valuables, the suspects would zoom off with the dog on their motorcycle.
He said that the suspects had been using the method to rob innocent and unsuspecting members of the public for a long time. But luck against them on September 5, 2017 when they ran into operatives of SARS at Ladipo.
The police chief said, “On September 5, 2017, two local criminals who specialise in robbing people by sending a dog to attack their victims were arrested. The suspects would command the Alsatian dog to attack a victim. The dog, in response to the command, will pounce on the victim. Gripped with fear, the victim will hand over all his or her belonging to the gang.”
Imohimi further disclosed that detectives had been on the trail of the suspects until they were eventually arrested.
But the suspects denied robbing anybody. Olajide explained that the woman who raised the alarm that her phone was missing eventually found it where she kept it. The suspect said he was surprised he was being paraded like “a common criminal.”
