In­car­cer­ated Kaduna jour­nal­ist re­gains free­dom

A Kaduna-based jour­nal­ist Luka Bin­niyat has been re­leased on bail after meet­ing the con­di­tions set by the court.

Bin­niyat, a former cor­re­spon­dent of Van­guard News­pa­pers, spent about 96 days in prison be­fore meet­ing his bail con­di­tions.

He was charged for breach of public peace and in­ju­ri­ous false­hood pun­ish­able un­der sec­tion 114 and 393 of the pe­nal code laws of Kaduna state.

Jus­tice Bashir Sukola of the state High Court 10 had on Oc­to­ber 9, 2017 re­laxed the bail con­di­tions ear­lier set for Bin­niyat in the sum of N10mil­lion with two sureties in the like sum and a bank bond in same amount, with de­po­si­tion of the sureties' in­ter­na­tional pass­port. He was how­ever re­manded in prison as he could not meet the bail con­di­tions.

A state­ment by chair­man of Kaduna State coun­cil of the Nige­ria Union of Jour­nal­ists (NUJ), Com­rade Adamu Yusuf, said Bin­niyat has since re­united with his fam­ily.
