Kwara PDP gets new chair
There was jubilation in Kwara State, yesterday, when Chief Akogun Iyiola Oyedepo emerged as the new chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Oyedepo was declared winner by the Ibrahim Idris-led electoral panel after polling 220 votes to narrowly beat his main challenger, Prince Sunday Fagbemi, who scored 217 votes in the state congress of the party, which began on Monday and ended around 7:43am in Ilorin yesterday.
The two other contestants in the chairmanship race, a former speaker of the State House of Assembly, Alhaji Babatunde Mohammed and an engineer, Mr Usman Jide Alabi, polled four and five votes respectively.
Shortly after the announcement of the result, the venue of the congress, Arca Santa Arena, erupted in jubilation as members and supporters of Oyedepo sang victory songs.
While announcing the result, Idris, a former Governor of Kogi State, said the congress was conducted with delegates from 11 local government areas of the state, declaring that the exercise was in line with the constitution of the PDP.
