Kwara PDP gets new chair

There was ju­bi­la­tion in Kwara State, yes­ter­day, when Chief Ako­gun Iyi­ola Oyedepo emerged as the new chair­man of the Peo­ples Demo­cratic Party (PDP).

Oyedepo was de­clared win­ner by the Ibrahim Idris-led elec­toral panel af­ter polling 220 votes to nar­rowly beat his main chal­lenger, Prince Sun­day Fagbemi, who scored 217 votes in the state congress of the party, which be­gan on Mon­day and ended around 7:43am in Ilorin yes­ter­day.

The two other con­tes­tants in the chair­man­ship race, a for­mer speaker of the State House of As­sem­bly, Al­haji Ba­batunde Mohammed and an en­gi­neer, Mr Us­man Jide Alabi, polled four and five votes re­spec­tively.

Shortly af­ter the an­nounce­ment of the re­sult, the venue of the congress, Arca Santa Arena, erupted in ju­bi­la­tion as mem­bers and sup­port­ers of Oyedepo sang vic­tory songs.

While an­nounc­ing the re­sult, Idris, a for­mer Gov­er­nor of Kogi State, said the congress was con­ducted with del­e­gates from 11 lo­cal gov­ern­ment ar­eas of the state, declar­ing that the ex­er­cise was in line with the con­sti­tu­tion of the PDP.
