Sul­tan in­au­gu­rates foun­da­tion to pro­mote peace

The Sul­tan of Sokoto, Al­haji Muham­mad Sa’ad Abubakar, has in­au­gu­rated the Sul­tan Foun­da­tion for Peace and De­vel­op­ment aimed at pro­mot­ing peace­ful co­ex­is­tence as well as strengthen ma­ter­nal and child health ser­vices in Northern Nige­ria.

Speak­ing at the in­au­gu­ra­tion Wed­nes­day, the Sul­tan said the foun­da­tion was a pri­vate, non-profit and non­govern­men­tal or­gan­i­sa­tion con­cerned with peace and de­vel­op­ment.

High­light­ing ac­tiv­i­ties of the foun­da­tion, the co­or­di­na­tor, Al­haji Aminu Inuwa, said the foun­da­tion was collaborating with the United Na­tions Chil­dren’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Na­tions Pop­u­la­tion Fund (UNFPA) to erad­i­cate po­lio and tackle ma­ter­nal health ser­vices in Northern Nige­ria.

He said: “The foun­da­tion of­fers hu­man­i­tar­ian as­sis­tance to peo­ple af­fected by Boko Haram and has en­gaged the Na­tional Com­mis­sion for Refugees, Mi­grants and In­ter­nally Dis­places Per­sons and the Na­tional Emer­gency Man­age­ment Agency with a view to find­ing the true po­si­tion of the plights of IDP’s and to col­lab­o­rate with the agen­cies in al­le­vi­at­ing their suf­fer­ing.”

He said the foun­da­tion was also collaborating with de­vel­op­ment, re­search and project cen­tres to strengthen ca­pac­ity of states’ min­istries of ed­u­ca­tion and their boards/ agen­cies to im­ple­ment the new sec­ondary school ed­u­ca­tion cur­ricu­lum and em­power girls with life skills by in­tro­duc­ing en­trepreneur­ship as a sub­ject or as a com­po­nent in some of the new trade sub­jects.
