Sultan inaugurates foundation to promote peace
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has inaugurated the Sultan Foundation for Peace and Development aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence as well as strengthen maternal and child health services in Northern Nigeria.
Speaking at the inauguration Wednesday, the Sultan said the foundation was a private, non-profit and nongovernmental organisation concerned with peace and development.
Highlighting activities of the foundation, the coordinator, Alhaji Aminu Inuwa, said the foundation was collaborating with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to eradicate polio and tackle maternal health services in Northern Nigeria.
He said: “The foundation offers humanitarian assistance to people affected by Boko Haram and has engaged the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaces Persons and the National Emergency Management Agency with a view to finding the true position of the plights of IDP’s and to collaborate with the agencies in alleviating their suffering.”
He said the foundation was also collaborating with development, research and project centres to strengthen capacity of states’ ministries of education and their boards/ agencies to implement the new secondary school education curriculum and empower girls with life skills by introducing entrepreneurship as a subject or as a component in some of the new trade subjects.
