Sus­pected ca­ble thief elec­tri­cuted at Karu trans­former site

A sus­pected elec­tric­ity ca­ble van­dal, said to be a vul­can­iser, was elec­tro­cuted at a trans­former close to the NIA Quar­ters on Kal­abari Road, Karu, Abuja.

City News gath­ered that the mid­dle-aged man, who was iden­ti­fied as In­no­cent Ajayi, climbed the trans­former dur­ing a power out­age to cut ca­bles at about 4:00am on Wed­nes­day morn­ing.

Ahmed Mo­hammed, a res­i­dent of the area said just as he was about to van­dalise the trans­former, Abuja Elec­tric­ity Dis­tri­bu­tion Com­pany (AEDC) re­stored power and he was elec­tro­cuted.

He said the de­ceased was re­leased from prison hav­ing spent time for a sim­i­lar of­fence.

He ex­plained that AEDC of­fi­cials from a nearby of­fice, with as­sis­tance from the fire ser­vice, came and brought down the charred corpse which was hung­ing on the elec­tric pole.

“AEDC of­fi­cials and fire­fight­ers ac­com­pa­nied by po­lice­men from the Karu divi­sion brought down the corpse from the pole. It was a hor­ri­ble sight,” he said.

The FCT po­lice com­mand’s spokesman, DSP An­juguri Man­zah, con­firmed the in­ci­dent say­ing the man died while at­tempt­ing to van­dalise elec­tric ca­bles.
