Late Akapson: NHRC demands accountability

- By Maureen Onochie

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has demanded accountability from law enforcement agencies for any violation of human rights in the course of their operations.

The Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Tony Ojukwu, stated this in Abuja while cautioning the police over the reported killing of Miss Anita Akapson at Katampe Extension in Abuja recently.

A statement by the Assistant Director Public Affairs of the commission, Fatimah Agwai Mohammad, noted that it was in a bid to address cases of gross human rights violations such as extra-judicial killings, maltreatment and unlawful detention by the Police that the commission, early this year, issued Directives 001/2018 on treatment of citizens and suspects by law enforcement officers.

While commending the Inspector General of Police for ordering the detention and investigation of some policemen involved in the act, he urged the federal government to ensure that justice was given to the family of the deceased in no distant time.
