Gunmen attack Dino Melaye’s country home

Sunday Trust - - NEWS - From Itodo Daniel Sule, Lokoja

Gunmen yesterday invaded Senator Dino Melaye’s home in Aiyetoro Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, with two of his cars riddled with bullets.

Dino, representing Kogi West in the Senate, was home for the Easter holidays.

He told journalists that the assailants stormed his residence at midnight and began shooting sporadically.

The senator said he got a rousing welcome from Kabba to his home on Friday and knew “it angered the power that be in the state which mobilised for this assassination attempt on my life.”

He said at about midnight he started hearing gunshots and that about 200 rounds of bullets were shot into the house.

Dino said, “If I speak the truth, I will die. If I lie, I will die. I have decided to speak the truth and die. I’m not afraid of death. I only respect men. I don’t fear them.”

“I suspect a satanic collabo between Taofiq (Chairman of Ijumu Local Government Area) and the police in Aiyetoro because the duo had a meeting two days ago. Only God will protect us in this country but definitely not the police,” he said.

In a reaction, the Administrator of Ijumu Local Government Area, Taofiq Isa, denied any hand in the invasion and challenged Dino to prove his allegations.

“I have never been a violent man. My running battle with Dino, if any, was because I have asked him to stop vilifying the state governor, Yahaya Bello,” Isa said.

Kogi State Police Commissioner, Mr Wilson Inalegwu, who confirmed the incident, said investigations have commenced.

He said the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigations Department and other men from the command have been deployed to the area, assuring that police were on top of the situation.
