Rivers United host Rwanda’s Rayon Sport in Conf. Cup
Rayon Sports will be looking to make history when they face off against NPFL side Rivers United in today’s playoff round first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup. No Rwandan side has ever reached the group stages of the second tier continental championship which is a huge target for the East Africans.
The visiting team is already in Nigeria ahead of the game which is scheduled to take place at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt.
The return leg will be played on April 22 at Amahoro National Stadium in Kigali and the winner of the tie will qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup group stages.
The match was initially supposed to be played last weekend, but it was postponed by CAF upon the request from Rwanda Football Federation as Rwanda was observing the commemoration week of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi (April 7-13).
Rayon Sports are the current Peace Cup holders and are making their first appearance in the playoff round since the new look continental showpiece was established in 2004. If they win they progress they will become the first Rwandan club to make it to the lucrative Confederation Cup group stages.
It will be the first meeting between the two teams.
