Four miscarriages in a row

Sunday Trust - - BEAUTY -

I am 37 and have had four miscarriages in a row. The first miscarriage was at five months while the last three were between six weeks and three months. I am getting frustrated. Toyin, Zaria

Your problem is called recurrent miscarriage. Also, the last three occurred in the first trimester, while the first was in the second trimester.

Most first trimester miscarriages are due to chromosomal abnormalities, while the second trimester miscarriages are common in patients with cervical incompetence.

You need examination: screening for diabetes, syphilis and TORCH Syndrome. The latter comprises of toxoplasmosis, rubella, Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and herpes virus.

In case of another pregnancy, the steps to take are progesterone support in the first trimester and cervical cerclage insertion at around 14.
