No suspect was freed in Niger police station attack – CP
The Niger State Police Command said yesterday that no suspect in its custody was freed in the foiled attempt by gunmen to invade a Divisional police office in Lemu, Gbako Local Government Area of Niger State on Thursday.
Gunmen had attempted to invade the office at about 8:pm on Thursday, triggering heavy exchange of fire between them and the police.
Media reports had said the attackers freed suspects in detention and carted away undisclosed number of arms and ammunition.
But the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Dibal Yakadi told Daily Trust on Sunday that the attempted invasion was foiled by his men.
He also said that no suspect was freed in the offensive which lasted for about an hour.
Mr Yakadi said contrary to the reports, only one AK 47 was lost by his men in the incident. He appealed to journalists to always cross-check their facts before going to press.
He further stated that men of the command are on the trail of the attackers and would bring them to book.
