2018 US Open Polo Championship: Daily Racing, Audi in winning starts
The pinnacle of the USA high goal series got underway Wednesday with Daily Racing Form and Audi polo teams taking to a flying with a hard earned opening victories in the prestigious championship revered as the pinnacle of the noble game of kings in USA .
Hosted under the auspices of the United State Polo Association (USPA) and staged at the foremost International Polo Club, in Wellington in Florida, the grand event attracted six top class teams with 26 handicap goals.
All the combatants parade some of the world’s most well-known polo faces showcasing their awesome skills at the hallowed IPC turf this year.
In the first game of the 2018 edition, Colorado was defeated by Daily Racing Form, 13-11, to set the tournament off in a grand style. That victory was swiftly followed the next day by a 13-7 win for Marc Ganzi’s Audi, against U.S Polo Assn. team.
Thursday also marked the comeback of Juan Martín Nero, who took to the field for U.S Polo Assn. team, having last appeared in the US Open’s 2016 Final for Orchard Hill.
In the third qualifying match, it was Melissa Ganzi’s Flexjet’s turn to take home the glory with a 9-4 win against rivals Colorado. Valiente made their tournament debut with a 9-6 win against U.S Polo Assn in a match that also marked the first-time teammates Facundo Pieres and Adolfo Cambiaso have come together in this tournament.
The qualifying stages were concluded Wednesday 11 April with matches between Daily Racing Form vs Flexjet and Audi vs Valiente, while the Quarter Finals stage will take centre stages before a full house at the Wellington Ground today, (Sunday 15 April).
The Semi Finals will take place on Wednesday 18 April, with the all-important US Open Final billed for Sunday 22 April.
