The Guardian (Nigeria) - - NEWS - From Joseph Wantu, Makurdi

AMAGISTRATE court sitting in Makurdi has denied bail to a serving councilor, James Aondover Semali and five others for their alleged killing of a 45year-old man, Michael Iormbaamo Iorchir of Shangev-ya District, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State.

The other five accused denied bail in the case are a former Supervisory Councilor, Akuha Shimaibo, Terzungwe Bem, Terwase Aloho, Tersoor Dura, and Asom Tyongi.

They were said to have invade the deceased’s residence, abducted and heinously killed and abandoned his dead body in the bush.

Ruling on the motions for bail, the presiding magistrate, Mrs. Igyama A.R. told counsels that the court lacked jurisdiction to grant clients ball since it's a case of culpable homicide and capital offense.

Meanwhile, worried by the tension surrounding the issue of salary arrears of workers in the state, the state house of assembly has asked the Benson Abounu led committee on modified salary table payment to appear before it on the 4th of October.

The assembly's reaction is aimed at stopping the looming strike action by the labour union next week. It directed the state government to forward the reports from the prince Mkpan's consultancy on the automatic finger print identification and the Tertseagh Ikyaabo staff verification exercise within one week.

In their resolution to know the exact wage bill of the state which had refused to drop despite series of verification exercises, it also summoned the state commissioner for finance and the accountant general of the state to appear before the house on the 5th of October to explain the motive and the extent of the implementation of the state of emergency on salary declared five months ago. Baba Otache said the current outrageous wage bill of 7.4 billion was uncalled for despite retirement and death of civil servants recalling that in 2005-2006 the wage bill of the state was not up to 2 billion.
