Gang storms Ow­erri court, kills 6, frees rob­bery sus­pect

Mem­bers of a kid­nap gang yes­ter­day stormed an Ow­erri High Court in Imo State and set free a no­to­ri­ous kid­nap­per and armed rob­ber, Henry Chibueze, aka ‘Vam­pire’, who had been in prison and was fac­ing trial at the court.

The armed gang ar­rived the court premises in the morn­ing in a jeep and waited for the ar­rival of the prison ve­hi­cle con­vey­ing some pris­on­ers to the High Court for trial.

As soon as they ar­rived and “Vam­pire” stepped out of the ve­hi­cle, his col­leagues, who were al­ready well po­si­tioned, opened fire on the prison es­corts.

Af­ter the shoot­ing, which lasted for about 10 min­utes, a prison warder and 5 oth­ers yet to be iden­ti­fied were found dead. Sev­eral oth­ers were in­jured while try­ing to escape.

Henry Chibueze or “Vam­pire”, was on July 26, 2015 pa­raded be­fore news­men at the DSS of­fice in Ow­erri in the pres­ence of the state Gov­er­nor Rochas Oko­rocha.

Imo State Prison Com­mand spokesman, James Madugba, who spoke to news­men at the scene, how­ever said no one was killed dur­ing the shoot­ing. He said the com­mand was ear­lier alerted on the pres­ence of some uniden­ti­fied per­sons who they sus­pected to be mem­bers of the DSS.
