7 Court remands traditional ruler, cleric in prison over Ile-Ife violence
An Osogbo High Court yesterday remanded a traditional ruler, Ademola Ademiluyi and five others accused persons in prison over their roles in the March 8 violence at Sabo in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
Other accused persons include a cleric, Taiwo Fakowajo and leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, (NURTW), Eluwole Akeem and Jimoh Sakiru, Daniel Olarenwaju and Bamidele Elurisanmi.
The accused persons were arraigned on a 14-count charge which included conspiracy, murder, armed robbery, public disturbance, stealing, grievous harm and arson among others.
Prosecuting Counsel, Mr Simon Lough, told the court that the accused conspired to murder 46 persons at Sabo area in IleIfe. He said they also committed armed robbery and stole property worth millions of naira when they attacked.
Lough added that Sakiru, Olarenwaju and Elurisanmi were also caught with some stolen items which include beans, indomie noodles, eggs, wheelbarrows and standing fans.
The six suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges. The defence counsel for all the accused persons, Mr Muritala Agboola, applied for the bail of his clients.
But Justice Kudirat Akano overruled the bail application and ordered that the suspects be remanded in prison custody and asked the defense counsel to forward a formal bail application. The case was adjourned to June 14, 15 and 16, 2017 for hearing.
