Gunmen pose as worshippers, raid church, shoot priest
Three gunmen suspected to be hired killers early yesterday raided the St. Thomas Catholic Church, Onilekekere, Lagos and shot the parish priest, Reverend Father Daniel Nwankwo.
Father Nwankwo is presently undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.
The attack took place shortly after the morning mass. Five persons have been arrested in connection with the incident. A police source said those arrested were detained at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.
It was gathered that the gunmen entered the church premises pretending to be worshipers.
Lagos State police spokesman, Olarinde Famous-Cole, said the gunmen who also took part in the morning mass requested to have a dialogue with Rev Father Nwankwo.
“The Rev Father granted them audience outside the church auditorium. During the cause of the discussion, one of the hoodlums who spoke fluent Igbo language shot the priest with a locally made pistol. The Rev Father raised an alarm after being shot and the hoodlums jumped over the fence and escaped through an adjoining canal behind the church.
Coke further disclosed that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, was at the scene and later visited the priest.
“The commissioner has also ordered the deployment policemen to the area. The policemen are to patrol churches and mosques on a 24-hour basis,” he said.
