Un­der­grad­u­ate kills mom over re­fusal to give money

A 22-year-old un­der­grad­u­ate, iden­ti­fied as Caleb Oba­sogi has killed his 55-year-old mother, Josephine Ig­bineweka over al­leged re­fusal to give him money.

The in­ci­dent was said to have hap­pened at about 8am on Thurs­day at her res­i­dence at 31A, Iyamu Street, off Tex­tile Mill Road, Benin City, Edo State.

Caleb was al­leged to have locked him­self and his mother in a room in their apart­ment and used a bro­ken bot­tle to stab and ripped her stom­ach be­fore neigh­bours could res­cue her.

It was learnt that the night be­fore the in­ci­dent, the sus­pect locked the de­ceased out­side for not giv­ing him the money he de­manded and had to pass the night in a neigh­bour’s house.

It was also gath­ered that Caleb is a fi­nal year ed­u­ca­tion stu­dent of the Univer­sity of Benin (UNIBEN) while his mother was a re­lax­ation joint op­er­a­tor.

Speaking to jour­nal­ists, a woman who claimed to have ac­com­mo­dated the de­ceased over night when she was locked out de­scribed the in­ci­dent as hor­ri­ble, say­ing the de­ceased was al­ready dead be­fore peo­ple ar­rived there.

Some of the de­ceased chil­dren at the Tex­tile Mill Road po­lice divi­sion where the sus­pect was be­ing in­ter­ro­gated de­clined com­ments.

The Edo State Po­lice Com­mand Public Re­la­tions of­fi­cer, DSP Moses Nkombe, con­firmed the killing.
