Law­mak­ers tasked on over­sight func­tions

The Jus­tice, De­vel­op­ment and Peace Com­mis­sion (JDPC) of the Catholic Dio­cese of Lokoja has called on mem­bers of the Kogi State House of As­sem­bly to take their leg­isla­tive over­sight re­spon­si­bil­i­ties se­ri­ous to en­sure sus­tain­able de­vel­op­ment in the state.

A mem­ber of the Steer­ing Com­mit­tee of JDPC in the state, Mr Idris Mi­liki, made the call at a one-day work­shop or­gan­ised for mem­bers of the Kogi State House of As­sem­bly on the theme: “Leg­isla­tive Over­sight, A Key to pro­mot­ing good gov­er­nance in democ­racy.”

He main­tained that mem­bers of the as­sem­bly should not only be con­tented with the yearly ritual of pass­ing ap­pro­pri­a­tion bills with­out any thor­ough over­sight ef­forts to en­sure the funds ap­pro­pri­ated ac­tu­ally trans­lated into tan­gi­ble projects.
