Nige­ria face Ar­gentina again in World Cup group phase

The Su­per Ea­gles of Nige­ria will face peren­nial ri­vals Ar­gentina in Group D of the 2018 FIFA World Cup fi­nals in Rus­sia along­side Ice­land and Croa­tia. Next year’s meet­ing is the fifth time, Nige­ria will be play­ing against Ar­gentina in the group phase, out of their six FIFA World Cup ap­pear­ances. The Africans have lost on all four pre­vi­ous oc­ca­sions.

Three-time African cham­pi­ons Nige­ria will also tackle Euro­pean teams Ice­land and ap­pear­ances in the fi­nals since then.

For their sec­ond match, Nige­ria will fly to Vol­gograd, where they take on Ice­land at the 45,000-ca­pac­ity Vol­gograd Arena on Fri­day, 22nd June 2018 at 6pm.

Ice­land is mak­ing a first ap­pear­ance at the FIFA World Cup, and is the small­est coun­try ever to qual­ify for the fi­nals. The coun­try has a pop­u­la­tion of 335,000. Ice­land shocked the whole of Europe last year sum­mer, reach­ing the quar­ter-fi­nals of the Euro­pean Cham­pi­onship in France. Heimir Hall­grims­son is coach and star player is Gylfi Sig­urds­son.
